Cooling centres open at Ambrel Lake and Westbrook Arena

As of August 5, 2024, Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for Wrenford and the surrounding area. The forecast predicts high temperatures and humidity that could make it difficult to breathe and stay cool. To keep residents safe, the City of Wrenford is opening cooling centres at the Ambrel Lake Recreation Centre and the Westbrook Community Arena.

Both facilities will be open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. throughout the warning period. Entry is free for everyone. These air-conditioned spaces are designed for anyone who needs a break from the heat, including seniors, families, and people without access to cooling at home. You can visit the Ambrel Lake Recreation Centre at 1300 Ambrel Lake Road, Wrenford, ON N4Q 5D4, or the Westbrook Community Arena at 40 Westbrook Drive, Wrenford, ON N4Q 2C9.

You can bring a pillow, blanket, or sleeping bag to rest comfortably. We recommend bringing a water bottle and staying hydrated. If you have pets, please note that only service animals are permitted inside the cooling centres. For questions or to check operating hours, call Ambrel Lake Recreation Centre at 519-555-0124 or Westbrook Community Arena at 519-555-0122.

"We want to make sure every resident has a safe place to go during extreme heat," says Fiona Gallagher, General Manager of Community Services. "These centres are free and open to anyone in the community who needs them."

If you are worried about a neighbour or someone who lives alone, check on them and let them know where the nearest cooling centre is. The heat warning is expected to last through the end of the week. Monitor the forecast and follow safety instructions if conditions change. Stay cool and look out for each other.
