City invites Indigenous youth to contribute art to forest plan

The City of Wrenford is inviting Indigenous youth across the city to share their creativity and vision for Wrenford’s new Urban Forest Plan through a community art project. Drop-in workshops will be held at the Seniors office and the Youth hub, beginning July 22, 2024.

The Urban Forest Plan is a long-term strategy to grow tree canopy cover, improve trail access, and create safe green spaces for all residents. As part of the public consultation process, the City is partnering with Indigenous youth to design a series of murals and wayfinding markers. These artworks will be installed along the Tamsin River Trail and in the Corvid Creek Ravine, ensuring that the city’s green spaces tell the stories of the people who care for them.

“We want the forests and green spaces in Wrenford to reflect the perspectives of everyone who lives here,” said City Councillor Grace Whitlock. “Inviting Indigenous youth to lead the art component ensures these spaces are meaningful and welcoming for all. It also gives young artists a chance to shape the places we visit every day.”

Youth aged 13 to 24 can register for the workshops online or in person at City Hall. The City will provide all art supplies, including paints, stencils, and safety gear. Seniors are welcome to attend alongside youth to share traditional knowledge about local plants and trees. The workshops are designed to be accessible, with materials available in multiple formats and assistance from volunteer facilitators.

Participants who complete the mural series will receive a certificate of completion and a $100.00 honorarium to support their artistic practice. The finished artworks will be installed in the fall, and a community unveiling will take place in September.
