The City of Wrenford is activating its Emergency Operations Centre today, April 10, 2024, as weather forecasts point to heavy rain and rapid snowmelt along the Tamsin River. City staff, emergency responders, and conservation authority partners are working together to monitor water levels, watch for basement flooding, and keep our community safe.
Spring flooding is a regular part of life in Wrenford. The Tamsin River and Corvid Creek can rise quickly when the ground is still frozen or when heavy rainfall meets melting snow. The City’s Emergency Operations Centre, located at the lower level of City Hall, serves as the hub for real-time coordination. Crews from Roads & Winter Maintenance, Water & Wastewater, and By-law Enforcement will be on standby to respond to reports of blocked catch basins, standing water on streets, and basement seepage.
We are asking residents to take a few simple steps right now. Check that your property’s downspouts and drainage tiles are clear. If you have a basement, make sure your sump pump is working and keep a battery backup ready. Review the City’s flood preparedness and prevention guide and keep a copy of the emergency kit checklist handy. If you notice water rising around your home or hear a sump pump failure, call 311 right away.
"The safety of our neighbours is our top priority," says City Manager Robert Eng. "We have our teams ready to respond, but we also need residents to stay alert, follow the advice we share, and look out for each other during this high-risk period."
The City will share updates through the Wrenford Emergency Alert Network, our social media channels, and local news partners. If you have not yet signed up for the City's alert system, please do so at sign up for alerts. Residents who want to learn more about how the City plans for river flooding and stormwater management can visit the Emergency Management section.
Stay safe, stay dry, and keep an eye on the weather. We will keep you posted as conditions change.
