City crews began soil preparation at Centennial Gardens on April 18 to get the formal gardens ready for the spring planting season. Located at 5 Victoria Street, the downtown gardens are a popular spot for morning walks, wedding photos, and quiet reflection near the cenotaph.
Over the next few weeks, Parks & Trails staff will be turning over the soil, removing winter debris, and spreading compost and mulch across the planting beds. This work helps the soil drain well and gives new annuals and perennials a strong start. Crews will also trim back overgrown shrubs and clean up the pathways so visitors can enjoy the space safely.
"We want to make sure the soil is rich and ready so the flowers and shrubs thrive once the weather warms up," said Maya Chen-Watson, Parks Planner. "It is hard work, but seeing the gardens bloom in July and August makes it all worth it."
Visitors should expect some temporary closures around the planting beds while the work is in progress. Signs and cones will mark the active areas. The rest of the park, including the cenotaph and the main walkways, will remain open. If you are planning a wedding photo session or want to book a shelter for a spring event, now is a great time to check the garden information page and reserve your spot.
The City also invites residents to help out. Volunteer groups can join the Spring Park Sweep Volunteer Days or take part in the Canopy for Wrenford tree planting programme to keep the neighbourhood green.
