The City of Wrenford today announced the completion of the accessible trail network upgrade at Benchlands Lookout Park. The project, finished ahead of the August long weekend, ensures that the entire loop around the falls is now paved with a firm, smooth surface suitable for wheelchairs, strollers, and walkers.
Work began in early June and included the installation of new drainage culverts, widening of the existing path, and the addition of four rest areas with benches and shade structures. The City also installed tactile paving at the trailheads and upgraded the nearby washrooms to meet full accessibility standards. The upgraded network now connects directly to the main Tamsin River Trail System at the eastern trailhead.
"This project is a great example of how we can improve our public spaces so that everyone in Wrenford can enjoy the outdoors," said Fiona Gallagher, General Manager of Community Services. "We listened to feedback from residents and disability advocates, and the result is a trail that is safe, comfortable, and welcoming for all abilities."
Visitors can now access the full 64-kilometre Tamsin River Trail System more easily from the west bank. The City has also added accessible parking permits nearby and installed clear wayfinding signs with large print and high-contrast graphics. For those using Wrenford Access specialized transit, the route has been adjusted to stop closer to the new trailhead entrance.
The upgrade is part of the City's broader commitment under the Wrenford Accessibility Plan to remove barriers in parks and public infrastructure. The City will continue to assess other trail segments for similar improvements in the coming years.
Residents who use the trails are encouraged to report any maintenance concerns or accessibility barriers through Wrenford 311 or by visiting the Accessibility feedback page. The City also offers sensory backpacks at the trailheads for visitors who may benefit from them.
