Construction vehicle permit requirements
You must hold a valid permit to operate heavy construction vehicles on City of Wrenford roads. These rules protect our infrastructure and ensure the safety of all road users. The City defines heavy vehicles as those exceeding 11.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight or having an axle load greater than 10 tonnes.
Permit application process
Before any heavy equipment enters City right-of-way, you must submit a permit application. You can apply online through the City’s service portal or visit the Engineering Standards office. Please allow at least five business days for processing. Rush applications may incur additional fees.
You will need to provide proof of insurance, vehicle registration, and a detailed route plan. The route must avoid low-clearance bridges and roads with weight restrictions. If your route intersects with active construction zones, you must coordinate with the project manager to avoid conflicts.
Vehicle standards and restrictions
All vehicles must be in good mechanical condition. Tires must be in proper condition to prevent debris from entering the roadway. During wet weather, tires must be clean and free of mud or clay that could be deposited on the pavement. If your vehicle tracks debris onto the road, you are responsible for immediate cleaning.
Heavy vehicles must not exceed posted weight limits unless you have a special overweight permit. Exceeding these limits can cause significant damage to roadways and utilities. The City conducts regular weigh-ins to enforce these standards. Violations may result in fines and suspension of permit privileges.
Protection of infrastructure
You must protect underground utilities from damage. Before digging or operating heavy machinery, you must call 811 to have utilities located. This is a legal requirement under provincial law. Failure to locate utilities can result in severe penalties and service disruptions for residents.
If you cause damage to City infrastructure, you are liable for all repair costs. This includes roads, curbs, sidewalks, and storm drains. The City may require a detailed repair plan before allowing you to proceed with restoration work.
