Ontario Works health benefits

Learn about the medical, dental and vision coverage you can get while you are on Ontario Works.

What is covered?

Ontario Works health benefits cover prescription drugs, dental care, vision care and medical supplies. You get these benefits when you are receiving basic Ontario Works support. You do not need to pay for these services when you show your health benefits card.

How to get your health benefits card

When you apply for Ontario Works at the Service Wrenford counter, you will get a health benefits card. Bring your approval letter and a photo ID with you. If you do not get a card with your application, contact your case worker. The card usually arrives in the mail within five to ten business days.

How to use your card

  • Prescriptions: Show your card to the pharmacist before you pay for your medication.
  • Dental care: Show your card at the dentist's office. It covers check-ups, fillings and basic treatments.
  • Vision care: Show your card at the optometrist. It covers eye exams and glasses or contact lenses.
  • Medical supplies: Your case worker can help you find a supplier for items like bandages or mobility aids.

When your benefits end or change

If your Ontario Works support stops or your household information changes, your health benefits will also change. You must tell your case worker right away. You can call 311 or visit Ontario Works contact information to report changes.

Other health services

Tamsin Valley Public Health runs immunization programs, food premises inspections and West Nile virus surveillance. These services are free for all Wrenford residents, including those on Ontario Works. You do not need your health benefits card for these services.
