About water main connections

If you are building a new home, adding a commercial building, or extending a property line, you will need a new water service connection from a City main. This page covers the application process, required documents, and fees for connecting your property to the Wrenford water distribution system. You can also use this process to replace an existing service line.

Who can apply

Applications must be submitted by the property owner or an authorized representative, such as a licensed contractor or engineer. If you are working through a development application, your civil engineer can prepare the technical drawings.

How to apply

Follow these steps to secure your water connection:

  1. Gather your documents. You will need a recent survey of the property showing the location of the proposed connection, a site plan, and proof of ownership or a letter of permission from the owner.
  2. Submit your application. Bring your completed application package to the Planning & Development office at City Hall, or submit it by email. You can also mail it to our Civic Operations Centre.
  3. Pay the required fees. Fees are collected at the time of application. We will calculate the exact amount based on the pipe diameter and the length of the service line.
  4. Engineering review. Our engineering staff will review your site plan to ensure it meets the Engineering Standards and does not conflict with existing underground utilities.
  5. Inspection and connection. Once approved, you will schedule a connection date. A City water operator will perform the tie-in to the main line. The City will also inspect the new service line before backfilling.

Important notes

  • Always call 311 or Request a utility locates before you dig. Hitting a water main or other utility line can cause serious service disruptions.
  • For properties outside the City limits, please review the Water and sewer service outside city limits page.
  • If you are connecting to an existing service instead of the main line, you may need a separate lateral connection permit. Contact us for details.
