What is a temporary street occupancy permit?

A temporary street occupancy permit lets you reserve parking spaces, temporarily suspend posted parking regulations, or close a portion of a public street for a short time. In Wrenford, you must have this permit before you occupy the street for moving trucks, service work, waste containers, construction deliveries, or special events.

When do you need one?

You need a permit if your activity will take up curb space, block a travel lane, use a bike lane, or require sidewalk closures. Common reasons include:

  • Moving in or out of a home or commercial building
  • Window cleaning or sign installation
  • Placing a waste container, storage bin, or dumpster on the street
  • Construction deliveries, crane lifts, or concrete pours
  • Special events or community activations

Permits are not issued for crew parking, and you cannot use them to take over a space where a vehicle is already legally parked.

How to apply

Follow these steps to get your permit approved and posted.

1. Review the requirements

If you are placing a bin or container on the street, you may need an additional street occupancy fee. Placing a bin in front of your own home where no parking restriction exists only requires a simple permission request for up to two days, and no fee applies. For anything else, you must purchase a permit.

2. Gather your information

Before you apply, collect the following details:

  • The exact location (street address or hundred block)
  • Existing parking rules at that location
  • Meter identification numbers, if applicable
  • The extent of space you need (curb lane, travel lane, or more)
  • Date, time, and duration of the work or event

Some activities, like closing a travel lane or sidewalk, require a traffic management plan. You must also provide a Commercial General Liability insurance certificate naming the City of Wrenford. Residents moving in or out with a bin do not need to provide insurance.

3. Submit your application

Simple applications are usually processed quickly. You can apply online through the Wrenford 311 service portal, or email [email protected] to book an appointment. Applications must be submitted at least seven to ten business days before your requested date. This lead time allows staff to post the required no-parking signs and cover parking meters.

4. Pay the fees

Permit fees are set out in the by-law. As of 2026, the standard fee is $140.00 for each seven-day period. If you need to store a bin or container on City property, an occupancy fee of $4.00 per ten square metres per day applies, with a minimum charge of $140.00. Fees are subject to change based on Council updates.

5. Know what to expect

A City crew will install the appropriate no-parking signage one to two business days before your permit start date. Keep a printed copy of your permit with you on the day of the work. If a vehicle is parked in your reserved space after signs are up, call 311 and provide the licence plate number. The vehicle will be towed at the owner's expense. You will not receive a refund if a car was parked before signs were installed, or if the signs are stolen or vandalized.
