When you need a permit
If you need to park a moving truck, place a waste container, or run a construction job on a Wrenford street, you will likely need a street use permit. This permit gives you permission to temporarily take over a parking lane or sidewalk for a specific date and time.
You must apply for a street use permit if you plan to:
- Park a moving truck or storage container in a parking lane
- Place a skip, dumpster, or waste container on the street
- Load or unload construction materials
- Park a crane, concrete truck, or other large work vehicle
- Host a community event or festival that blocks a street
You do not need a permit for short-term loading and unloading (under 15 minutes) if you stay with your vehicle and do not block traffic.
How to apply
Please allow at least seven business days before your planned date. We need time to check traffic patterns, post signs, and issue your permit.
- Check the rules. Review the By-laws Traffic and Parking By-law 2014-075 and the By-laws Site Alteration By-law 2022-071. Some streets, like Tamsin Street and Benchlands Drive, have peak-hour bus lanes that cannot be blocked.
- Gather your details. Write down the exact street address or block, the dates and times you need the space, and what kind of work or vehicle you will use.
- Prepare your insurance. Business applicants must provide a certificate of commercial general liability insurance for at least $2 million. Residents moving in or out of their home do not need to provide insurance.
- Submit your application. Email your completed application package and insurance certificate to [email protected]. You can also drop off a printed copy at the Roads and Winter Maintenance office, Room 210, Wrenford City Hall, 100 Mercer Street.
- Pay the fee. Once we review your application, we will email you an invoice. Payment must be received before we issue the permit.
Fees and insurance
Fees cover the cost of posting signs and administrative processing. All fees are set out in the Fees and Charges By-law 2025-151.
- Application fee: $150.00
- Signage fee: $25.00 per 7-day period
- Waste container occupancy fee: $40.00 per day for containers larger than 2 cubic metres
If your project requires a traffic management plan or a lane closure beyond the curb lane, you may face additional lane use fees. Contact us early to discuss your needs.
What to expect on your permit date
- Our crew will install "No Parking" signs in the reserved area one to two business days before your start date.
- Keep a copy of your permit with you or in your work vehicle at all times.
- If a car is parked in your reserved spot after the signs go up, call 311 or 519-555-0100. We will arrange for it to be towed. Please note that we cannot tow vehicles that were already parked there before the signs were installed, and we do not issue refunds for those situations.
- You must remove your vehicle or container by the end time listed on your permit. Extra charges apply for every day the space is held over.
