Electric vehicle charging

Find out where to charge your electric vehicle in Wrenford, including public station rates, home installation tips, and preparation rules for new buildings.

Switching to a zero-emission vehicle

Choosing an electric vehicle helps cut pollution and supports cleaner air in Wrenford. Whether you drive short distances or commute, you can find charging options at home, on the street, or at city locations. Using a public charger is a reliable way to keep your vehicle running when you are away from home.

Charging at home

Most drivers charge their vehicles at home. There are two main types of chargers for cars and light trucks:

  • Level 1 chargers: These use a standard 120-volt wall outlet. They add about 3 to 8 kilometres of range per hour. This is the cheapest option and works well for drivers who travel short distances daily.
  • Level 2 chargers: These use a 240-volt outlet, similar to what a dryer or stove uses. They add 20 to 50 kilometres of range per hour, giving you a full charge in a few hours. This is the most common choice for home installations.

Single-family homes

If you own a house, you can install a Level 2 charger in your garage or driveway. Always hire a licensed electrician to make sure your home electrical panel can handle the extra load and to follow provincial safety standards.

Multi-unit buildings

If you live in an apartment, condo, or townhouse without a dedicated parking spot, talk to your building manager. Wrenford supports electric vehicle charging advisors who can help stratas and landlords plan charging installations. Check the provincial government website for rebate programs on electric vehicle purchases and home charger installations.

Public charging stations

Wrenford is growing its network of public charging stations. City-owned chargers are available at key locations, including the Downtown Transit Terminal, Wrenford City Hall parking lot, and the Northgate Aquatic Centre. You can find nearby chargers using online maps and mobile apps.

Rates at city stations

Charging fees are based on the amount of electricity used. This means you only pay for the energy your vehicle actually takes.

  • Level 2 charging: $0.32 per kilowatt-hour
  • DC fast charging (25 kW or higher): $0.45 per kilowatt-hour, plus a $0.50 per minute idle fee after 5 minutes

Once your vehicle stops charging at a fast charger, you have 5 minutes to disconnect before the idle fee applies. The idle fee does not apply to Level 2 chargers. Parking fees still apply if you park in a paid lot or garage.

Preparation rules for new buildings

To make home charging easier for future residents, Wrenford requires new buildings to be prepared for electric vehicle charging. This means the electrical wiring and conduits are already in place so a charger can be added later without major construction.

  • All residential buildings: 100% of parking stalls must be prepared.
  • Non-residential buildings (except hotels): 45% of stalls must be prepared.
  • Hotels and bed and breakfasts: 100% of stalls must be prepared.

Dedicated parking and incentives

Wrenford partners with local parking operators to reserve ten per cent of stalls in city lots for zero-emission vehicles. You must display a valid provincial zero-emission vehicle decal in your windshield to use these spots. These reserved spaces work alongside public chargers to make it easier for electric vehicle drivers to park and charge.
