How long can a vehicle idle in Wrenford?
When your engine is running but the vehicle is not moving, it is idling. Wrenford limits idling to keep our air clean and our streets quiet.
- Commercial vehicles may idle for no more than three minutes while parked.
- Personal vehicles may idle for no more than two minutes at any time.
These rules apply on all City streets, in parking lots, and on driveways. If you are waiting for someone, pull over off the road or turn off your engine.
Why does the City limit idling?
Idling wastes fuel and releases exhaust fumes that can harm your health. Even a short wait adds pollutants to the air we share. Quiet streets also make it safer for children playing outside and for people who walk or cycle through the city. By cutting down on idling, you help Wrenford meet its air quality and noise targets. Fewer idling vehicles mean cleaner air for our schools and parks, and less strain on our local health care system.
When is idling allowed?
The City understands that sometimes you need to keep your engine running. You may idle without penalty in these situations:
- You are stuck in traffic or a queue.
- You are waiting for an emergency vehicle, ambulance, or police car.
- You are loading or unloading passengers or goods, and you stay with the vehicle.
- Your vehicle needs to warm up in extreme cold, but you should still turn it off after two minutes.
- You are driving a bus, taxi, or rideshare vehicle at a designated pick-up zone.
If you need an exemption for a special event or a long-term project, you can apply for a temporary permit through the Noise bylaw exceptions and permits page.
How to report a violation
If you see a vehicle idling for too long, you can report it to By-law Enforcement. Please call 311 from inside the city, or 519-555-0100 from outside. You will need to give the vehicle’s make, model, and vehicle number. You can also send a quick email to [email protected] with a photo or video if you have one. All reports are kept confidential.
Tips to reduce idling
Small changes make a big difference. Try these simple steps to cut down on idling in Wrenford:
- Turn off your engine if you expect to wait more than two minutes.
- Plan your errands to avoid sitting in traffic queues.
- Use cruise control on highways to keep your speed steady and save fuel.
- Encourage your workplace to adopt a no-idling policy for delivery trucks and staff vehicles.
- Keep your vehicle well-maintained. A tuned engine burns fuel more efficiently and produces fewer fumes.
Share these tips with your friends and neighbours. Together, we can keep Wrenford’s air fresh and our neighbourhoods peaceful.
