Discharge of firearms bylaws

Learn the rules for using firearms in Wrenford, where it is allowed, where it is not, and how to report violations.

Why this by-law exists

The City of Wrenford has a by-law to keep our neighbourhoods safe. Discharging a firearm in a residential area or a public space can cause serious injury or property damage. This page explains where you can and cannot use a firearm, when exceptions apply, and what happens if you break the rules.

Where you cannot discharge a firearm

You must not discharge a firearm within the city limits unless you are at a licensed range or have specific permission. This rule applies to:

  • All city parks, including Riverside Flats Park, Ambrel Lake Park, and Benchlands Lookout Park.
  • The Corvid Creek Ravine and the Tamsin River Trail System.
  • Downtown Wrenford, including Market Square and the area around City Hall.
  • Any residential street or driveway.
  • Within 100 metres of a dwelling, school, church, or public building.

Where you can discharge a firearm

You may use a firearm in Wrenford only in these specific situations:

  • At a licensed shooting range, such as the private ranges located just outside the city boundary.
  • On private land outside the city limits, provided you have the landowner's written permission and follow all provincial hunting and firearms laws.
  • During organized target events held at a designated facility with a temporary permit from the City.

Exceptions and exemptions

This by-law does not apply to:

  • Members of the Wrenford Police Service and Wrenford Fire Rescue when using firearms in the line of duty.
  • Lawful hunting activities that take place outside the city limits.
  • Accidental discharges that occur during lawful sporting events at approved facilities.

Fines and penalties

If you break this by-law, you may receive a ticket. The fines are:

  • First offence: $300.00
  • Second offence: $600.00

You can pay your fine at the Provincial Offences Court or online through the provincial payment portal.

How to report a violation

If you see someone using a firearm in a restricted area, do not approach them. Call 911 if you feel there is an immediate danger. For non-emergency situations, contact the Wrenford Police Service at 519-555-0117 or email By-law Enforcement at [email protected]. Please include your location and a description of the activity when you report it.
