What this by-law covers
The Noise By-law 2016-122 helps keep Wrenford neighbourhoods peaceful. It applies to all residential properties, including single-detached homes, townhouses, and low-rise apartments. The goal is simple: you have the right to enjoy your home without unreasonable noise, and you have the responsibility to keep your noise from disturbing your neighbours.
Daily quiet hours
Daily quiet hours run from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. every day. During this time, all noise must be kept to a minimum. You should not use power tools, play loud music, or host gatherings that can be heard outside your property line.
Construction and equipment noise
Construction work and the use of power tools are allowed during these hours:
- Monday to Friday: 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
- Saturday: 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
- Sunday and statutory holidays: No construction noise is permitted.
If you need to work outside these hours, you must apply for a noise exemption permit.
Vehicle idling limits
To reduce noise and emissions in residential areas, the City enforces strict idling rules:
- Personal vehicles: 2-minute limit
- Commercial vehicles: 3-minute limit
These limits apply when a vehicle is parked or stopped in a residential zone, even if the engine is running.
Pet noise
Pet noise falls under the Responsible Pet Ownership By-law 2018-063. You must supervise your pets when they are outside so they do not bark or howl in a way that disturbs neighbours. If your pet's noise becomes a regular issue, it may be flagged as a nuisance.
How to report a noise violation
If you experience noise that breaks these rules, you can file a complaint. The City takes residential noise seriously and will investigate.
- Call 311 from inside the city, or 519-555-0100 from outside.
- You can also email [email protected].
- If the noise is part of a criminal activity or an emergency, call 911.
For the By-law Enforcement team to act, you must provide your name and address. We do not accept anonymous complaints. Please be ready to share:
- Your name and address.
- A primary and alternate phone number.
- The exact address where the noise is coming from.
- A brief description of the noise and when it happened.
Your information stays confidential. A By-law Enforcement officer may visit the location or contact you directly to discuss the situation.
Fees and fines
Violating the Noise By-law 2016-122 carries strict penalties:
- First offence: $100.00 fine
- Second offence: $250.00 fine
Repeat offenders may face higher penalties or court proceedings. Paying a fine does not stop the noise. The By-law Enforcement team will continue to work with you until the issue is resolved.
