Busking and street entertainment bylaws

Learn the rules, locations, and permit requirements for busking and street entertainment in Wrenford.

Where you can busk in Wrenford

You can perform in public spaces across the city, but you must follow the Street Entertainment rules. Popular spots include Market Square in the downtown core, Centennial Gardens, and the trailheads along the Tamsin River Trail System. You can also perform at the Downtown Transit Terminal.

When you can perform

  • Weekdays: 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
  • Weekends and holidays: 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
  • Each performer may stay in one spot for a maximum of two hours before moving to a new location.

Where busking is not allowed

Street entertainment is not permitted on private property, inside shops, or in areas that block pedestrian or vehicle traffic. You cannot perform in Corvid Creek Ravine Natural Area due to its quiet environment and steep terrain. Performances must not interfere with emergency vehicles or transit operations.

Rules for amplification and safety

You can use small, battery-powered amplifiers in commercial areas, but you must keep the volume low enough that people can talk normally and hear transit announcements. Amplifiers are not allowed in parks, gardens, or inside the Downtown Transit Terminal. All performances must follow the Noise By-law 2016-122.

For your safety and the public's, no high-risk acts are permitted. This includes performances with knives, fire, or stunts that could endanger crowds. All acts must be suitable for a general family audience.

Age requirements

You must be 18 years old or older to busk on your own. If you are 16 or 17, you need a signed consent form from a parent or guardian. Performers under 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Selling merchandise

You may sell your own music, recordings, or artwork directly from your performance area. You cannot set up separate tables or sell third-party goods. Merchandise must stay within your performance space.

Rules at transit stops

Busking is only allowed at the Downtown Transit Terminal on the main concourse level. You must check in with transit staff before you start and check out when you finish. Do not block the help phones, stairs, or walkways. Only musical acts are allowed inside the terminal.

How to get a permit

To busk legally, you need a Street Entertainment Permit. The application is free, but there is an annual licence fee of $25.00. You can apply online or pick up a form at Wrenford City Hall. Once approved, you will receive a permit card that you must display visibly during every performance.

If you break the rules, a by-law officer can ask you to leave or issue a fine. Repeated violations may result in losing your permit.
