What is asset management?
Asset management is the way the City plans, builds, maintains and replaces the physical things that keep Wrenford running. This includes our roads, bridges, water and wastewater systems, transit fleet, recreation facilities, parks and City buildings. Managing these assets well helps us deliver reliable services today while keeping costs predictable for the future.
Why asset management matters
Infrastructure ages. Roads crack, pipes corrode and buildings need updates. At the same time, we must adapt to climate change, meet provincial requirements and grow our community. Asset management gives Council and staff a clear picture of what we own, how it is performing and what it will cost to keep it working. It turns guesswork into planned, long-term decisions.
How we plan
The City follows a plan-do-check-act cycle for all major infrastructure. This means we plan our work, carry it out, check the results and adjust as needed. Our approach is guided by the Corporate Asset Management Plan, which brings together the individual plans from City Services departments such as Roads, Water and Wastewater, Transit, Parks and Fire.
Each year we publish an Infrastructure Status Report that shows the actual condition of our assets based on inspections and maintenance data. The report feeds into our long-term financial planning and helps us set realistic Level of Service targets—the standards of service you expect, like how quickly we fix a pothole or maintain a park.
Funding our future
Asset management is closely linked to our budget and reserve funds. The Major Renewal Reserve and Park Renewal Reserve fund the long-term replacement of transit, water equipment and playgrounds. We also factor in climate adaptation strategies to make sure our drainage, roads and trails can handle heavier rain and hotter summers. All of this is tracked in the Capital Works Program so you can see exactly where your tax dollars are going.

Your voice matters
Asset management is not just about engineering and spreadsheets. It is about the services you use every day. We rely on resident feedback to set and review our Level of Service targets. When we launch a Level of Service survey, your answers help us decide where to focus our next budget. Keep an eye on Budget engagement for upcoming surveys and public sessions.
