What you need to know
A sign permit is required for any new sign, sign replacement, or major repair on private property in the Downtown Business Improvement Area. This includes awnings, window signs, projecting signs, and illuminated displays. All signs in the Downtown Historic District must follow the heritage guidelines set out in the Sign By-law.
Signs that do not need a permit
- Signs that only show your building number or street name.
- Signs inside a building that cannot be seen from the street.
- Traffic or parking signs authorized by the City.
- Temporary political or real estate signs.
- Window signs that are removed at the end of each season.
Steps to get a permit
1. Check the rules
Review the Sign permits and regulations. The Downtown Historic District has strict size, height, and placement rules to protect the heritage character of the area.
2. Submit your application
Fill out the sign permit application form. You will need a site plan, a drawing of the sign, and a photo of the building face. Submit your application online or drop it off at the Service Wrenford counter.
3. Pay the fee
Pay the permit fee when you submit your application. If your sign needs electrical work, you will also need a separate electrical permit.
4. Installation and inspection
Once approved, you have 12 months to install the sign. Book a final inspection by emailing [email protected]. An inspector will verify that the sign matches your approved drawings and is safely mounted.
Fees
- Standard sign permit: $150.00
- Large projecting or illuminated sign: $300.00
- Replacement of an existing sign: $75.00
