When you need a sign permit
A sign permit is required for the construction, placement, or major repair of any sign on private property in Wrenford. You must apply before you install your sign. The Sign By-law 2020-088 sets the rules for size, height, and placement to keep our streets safe and visually consistent.
Signs that do not require a permit
Some signs are exempt from the permit process, provided they meet the conditions in the by-law:
- Signs smaller than 0.1 square metres
- Signs located inside a building that cannot be seen from the street
- Street or traffic control signs
- Address numbers attached to a building
- Flags and political signs during an election
- Real estate and open house signs
- Construction site signs
Note: Even if a sign does not require a permit, it must still follow the rules in the by-law. If you are unsure, contact the Business Licensing Office.
How to apply
Applications are processed online through the Wrenford Business Portal. Follow these steps:
- Prepare your application. You will need a site plan, a drawing of the proposed sign, and proof of property ownership or a lease.
- Submit your application and pay the fee online. Each sign requires a separate permit.
- Staff will review your application. You will receive an email with any conditions or required changes.
- Once approved, download and print your permit. You must install the sign within 12 months of the issue date, or the permit will expire.
Special sign areas and variances
Certain areas, such as the Downtown Business Improvement Area, may have specific sign frameworks. If your project falls under a comprehensive sign plan, your proposal must comply with the established framework. If you need a variation from the by-law, you must submit a Development Variance Permit application through the Planning & Development section.
Permit fees
The standard application fee is $225.00 per permit. Additional fees may apply if your sign requires a new electrical connection or a building permit. Refer to the Fees and Charges By-law 2025-151 for the full schedule.
Inspections
Once your sign is installed, you must request a final inspection. Email a request to [email protected] with photos of the erected sign, your permit number, and your property address. An inspector will verify that the sign meets the by-law requirements.
