Who needs a water service connection?
If you are building a new home, adding a secondary suite, renovating a business, or changing the use of a property, you must apply for a water service connection. The City of Wrenford provides drinking water from the Tamsin River Water Treatment Plant to properties within city limits. Once you are connected, you will receive a monthly water bill based on your usage.
How to apply
Follow these steps to get your water service connected:
- Check your zoning and planning status. Make sure your property is zoned for the intended use. If you need a zoning change or a minor variance, contact the Planning and Development office first. You can also view the Zoning bylaw maps.
- Prepare your engineering drawings. A licensed engineer must prepare a site plan showing where the water service line will run from the City main to your property line. The drawings must meet the Engineering Standards.
- Submit your application. Bring your completed application form, engineering drawings, and proof of ownership to the Service Wrenford counter at Wrenford City Hall. You can also mail or email your application to the Water and Wastewater department.
- Pay your fees. Pay the connection fee and any applicable development charges. We accept cash, debit, or credit card at City Hall. If you pay by pre-authorized monthly payment, you may be eligible for a discount on future utility bills.
- Schedule the installation. Once your application is approved and paid, our Water Operations team will schedule the tap installation. A City-licensed plumber must perform the actual connection work under the supervision of a City inspector.
Fees and charges
Water service connection fees cover the cost of materials, labour, and inspection. All fees are set out in the Budget and the Fees and Charges By-law 2025-151.
| Service type | Fee |
|---|---|
| Residential connection (up to 25 mm) | $1,850.00 |
| Commercial connection (up to 50 mm) | $3,200.00 |
| Additional meter installation | $450.00 |
| Reconnection after disconnection | $275.00 |
Important rules
Keep these requirements in mind before you start your project:
- All plumbing work must meet the Ontario Building Code and be inspected by a City inspector before the trench is backfilled.
- If your property is in a floodplain along the Tamsin River or Corvid Creek, you may need a permit from the Tamsin Valley Conservation Authority before digging.
- The Site Alteration By-law 2022-071 protects trees near the water main. You must apply for a permit if any roots or soil within the drip line of a City-owned tree are affected.
- We will not connect your service until your property is fully graded and all other utilities are in place.
