Why get certified?
Do you want to work at a Wrenford pool or teach others to swim? Our recreation staff can guide you through the steps to get certified. Whether you are looking to become a lifeguard or a swim instructor, the Lifesaving Society offers a clear pathway of courses.
Your path to lifeguarding
To become a lifeguard at Tamsin Valley Leisure Centre or Northgate Aquatic Centre, you need to build your skills step by step.
- Bronze Star (Ages 10+): Learn to swim better, rescue yourself, and stay fit. This course prepares you for Bronze Medallion.
- Bronze Medallion (Ages 13+): Focuses on the four parts of water rescue: judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness. You will learn CPR and how to use an AED.
- Bronze Cross (Ages 13+): This is where you start learning active supervision. You will practice teamwork and communication to prevent emergencies. You must also hold a current Intermediate First Aid and CPR-C certificate.
- National Lifeguard (Ages 15+): The final step. This course covers advanced rescue techniques, decision-making, and the responsibilities of a professional lifeguard. You need a current Intermediate First Aid and CPR-C certificate.
Your path to swim instruction
To teach the Swim for Life program, you need to show leadership and teaching skills.
- Lifesaving & Swim for Life Instructor (Ages 15+): You will learn how to plan lessons, teach stroke mechanics, and evaluate swimmers. You must have a Bronze Cross or higher award.
- Recertification: If your certificate has expired, you can take a refresher course to update your skills and pass an observation test.

New swimmers can take a free Swimmer Skill Check to find out which level is right for them.
Inclusive swimwear policy
Wrenford Recreation welcomes people from all backgrounds. You may wear traditional garments like saris or hijabs, provided you also wear a swimsuit or undergarments underneath. For safety, please take a full shower before entering the pool and wear clean clothes when you arrive. If you are wearing a sari, please stay in the shallow end and do not use the dive tank.
