Garden plot registration

Register for a City-managed garden plot in Wrenford. Learn about fees, registration dates, rules and how to start a community garden.

Grow your own food in a City-managed plot

The City of Wrenford prepares and maintains garden plots that you can rent for a full growing season. Unlike a neighbourhood community garden, which is organized and run by residents, a City plot program gives you a private space to grow vegetables, herbs and flowers with City-managed water access and compost.

Each plot is clearly marked with a metal flag. You are responsible for the soil and plants inside your boundaries, but the City handles the initial soil testing, tilling and seasonal cleanup. This means you can focus on planting and harvesting without worrying about heavy groundwork.

Plot sizes and fees

Plots are available at Riverside Flats Park and Centennial Gardens. Each standard plot measures 10 feet by 20 feet.

  • Standard plot (10 × 20 ft): $45.00 per season
  • Accessible plot (raised bed, 4 × 8 ft): $25.00 per season

Fees cover soil preparation, water access, compost bins and seasonal cleanup. Payment is accepted at the Service Wrenford counter in City Hall or online through Wrenford Recreation Online. We accept debit, credit and cash. Receipts are emailed automatically.

Registration dates and how to register

Registration for the spring and summer season opens on the first Monday of March. Returning gardeners get a four-day head start to renew their plot. New applicants can register starting the following Monday.

Plots are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. If you need help with the online registration form or want to request a specific plot location, email [email protected] or call 519-555-0100. Our staff can also tell you which plots get the most morning sun.

Rules and guidelines

To keep the gardens healthy and safe for everyone, please follow these rules:

  • No synthetic chemicals. Only organic fertilizers and natural pest control methods are allowed.
  • Water access. City water is provided at the north end of the plot fields. Bring your own hose or watering cans.
  • Regular maintenance. You must tend your plot weekly. Weeds and dead plants must be cleared regularly.
  • Fall cleanup. All plants, stakes and mulch must be removed by October 31. Plots left with debris will be cleared by the City, and the plot will be reassigned.
  • Tools and sheds. Large tools are not permitted. Small hand tools can be stored in the provided lockers at the park washroom building.
  • Composting. Please use the City compost bins at the end of the row. Do not bury green waste in your plot.

Starting a community garden in your neighbourhood

If you want a garden that is managed by your neighbours rather than the City, you can propose a community garden. Resident-led gardens require a formal proposal that includes a volunteer list, an organizational plan, liability insurance, a water and topsoil plan, a maintenance schedule and a budget. The City's Community Development team can review your proposal and provide a handbook to help you get started.

Submit your proposal to [email protected]. We are happy to assist with the planning process.
