Adopt a rain garden program

Volunteer to maintain a rain garden in your neighbourhood. Learn how to filter stormwater, help pollinators, and join the program today.

Help manage stormwater and beautify your neighbourhood

Rain gardens are shallow, planted depressions that capture and soak up runoff from driveways, roads, and parking lots. They filter out pollutants, reduce flooding, cool the air, and provide habitat for pollinators. Since the City began the program in 2018, over 35 rain gardens have been installed across Wrenford to protect the Tamsin River and Ambrel Lake.

We need volunteers to keep these gardens healthy and thriving. You can join the program in two ways, depending on how much time you want to give.

Option 1: Become an official rain garden steward

This option is for residents who can commit to maintaining a specific rain garden for at least one year. You will learn how to care for the plants, remove weeds, and clear debris from the inlet. You can borrow tools from City Services, and we will track your volunteer hours. If you need a reference letter for school or work, just ask.

Stewards follow a simple seasonal schedule. In spring, you will help plant new perennials and mulch the beds. Summer means weekly weeding and checking for standing water. In fall, you will clear leaves from the inlet and prepare the garden for winter. Applicants of all ages are welcome. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.

Option 2: Become a rain garden supporter

If you cannot commit to a long-term role, you can still help. Watch our online training videos to learn the basics. You will focus on picking up litter and keeping the area tidy on your own schedule. There is no time commitment, and volunteer hours are not tracked for this level.

How to get started

Ready to join? It is simple. Send us an email at [email protected] or call 311 (dial 311 inside city limits, or 519-555-0100). Tell us which option works for you and your neighbourhood, and we will send you the training materials or schedule your site visit.
