Speed limits in school and playground zones

Drivers must slow down in designated school and playground zones to keep children, pedestrians, and cyclists safe. The Wrenford Police Service enforces these limits year-round. Signs at the entrance and exit of each zone show the exact dates and times that apply. Always follow the posted times, as they change with the school calendar and daylight saving time.

School zones

  • Speed limit: 30 km/h
  • Effective times: 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on school days only
  • What to watch for: Signs at every school zone show the exact dates and times that apply to that school.

Playground zones

  • Speed limit: 30 km/h
  • Effective times: 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. every day
  • What to watch for: Signs mark the start and end of the zone along the road. These zones are usually located near parks and community centres.

Playground areas

Some parks are not inside a marked playground zone. The normal posted speed limit applies, but you must always drive slowly and watch for children playing, strollers, and pedestrians entering the park. Use extra caution near the Ambrel Lake Park and Riverside Flats Park trailheads.

Parking and stopping rules near schools

During drop-off and pick-up times, traffic moves slowly. You must follow the posted signs for each school. These rules are enforced under the Traffic and Parking By-law 2014-075.

  • No stopping: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on school days. Keep the zone clear so students can safely get in and out of vehicles.
  • No parking: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on school days. You may stop for no more than five minutes to load or unload students.
  • Blocking traffic: Do not stop on a crosswalk, within six metres of a crosswalk, or too close to a corner. Vehicles that block pedestrians or other drivers will be ticketed and may be towed at the owner's expense.

Enforcement and reporting

Wrenford Police Service officers patrol school and playground zones during all effective hours. By-law Enforcement officers also monitor loading zones when police resources are needed elsewhere. If you see a driver breaking the rules, a vehicle parked illegally during restricted hours, or a sign that is hard to read or damaged, contact the By-law Enforcement team.
