Copy of Street use permit for construction

Learn how to apply for a permit to temporarily occupy a street or sidewalk for construction work in Wrenford.

Road reconstruction on an urban street: excavator, traffic cones, a paid-duty flagger, new curbs being formed

When you need a permit

You need a street use permit when you plan to temporarily occupy a public roadway, sidewalk, or alley for construction work. This covers moving trucks, waste containers, crane lifts, concrete pours, and deliveries that block parking lanes, bike lanes, or travel lanes. If you only need to use the curb lane for a single-family project, you may be able to apply online. For complex projects or longer durations, you must submit a full package.

What to submit

Send your application package to [email protected] or drop it off at the One-Stop Development Shop, Room 200, Wrenford City Hall, 100 Mercer Street. Include the following documents:

  • Completed application form
  • Certificate of Commercial General Liability Insurance for at least $2,000,000. Residents moving in or out are exempt from this requirement.
  • A traffic management plan if your work will close a sidewalk, travel lane, or bike lane. This plan must show how pedestrians and traffic will flow safely around your site.
  • The exact location, dates, and times of the work.

How long it takes

We need at least seven business days to process your permit and post the required signs. If you have a shorter timeline, email us and we will check if we can still approve it. Contacting us does not guarantee approval for rush requests. We prioritize emergency repairs over scheduled construction.

Fees

Permit fees are set out in the Fees and Charges By-law 2025-151. Charges include:

  • $150.00 administrative fee per permit
  • $45.00 per day for sidewalk closure
  • $125.00 per day for travel lane closure
  • $3.50 per square metre per day for waste containers stored on city property

What happens after approval

Once approved, a city crew will install the appropriate no-parking signs one to two business days before your start date. Keep a copy of the permit on site at all times. If a vehicle is parked in your reserved space after the signs are up, call 311 and provide the licence plate number so it can be towed. We cannot tow cars that were parked before the signs were installed, and we do not refund permits for signs that are stolen or vandalized.
