What the Tree Protection By-law covers

The Tree Protection By-law 2018-045 helps keep Wrenford's tree canopy healthy and protects mature trees on private property. The by-law sets rules for when you can remove a tree, how to apply for a permit, and when you must plant a replacement.

When you need a permit

You need a tree removal permit if your tree meets any of these conditions:

  • It measures at least 20 centimetres in diameter, measured 1.4 metres above the base.
  • It has multiple stems at 1.4 metres, and the combined diameter of the two largest stems is 20 centimetres or more.
  • It was listed as a condition in an approved development or building permit.

You do not need a permit if the tree is dead, dying, diseased, or poses a clear hazard to people or property. Trees removed as part of an active development project are covered under your building permit.

How to apply

Follow these steps to submit your application:

  1. Gather your documents. You will need a site plan showing existing buildings, streets, and all trees on the property. You must also submit an arborist report prepared by an International Society of Arboriculture (ISA)-certified arborist. If you are not the property owner, include a signed letter of authorisation. If the tree is on a strata property or shared by neighbouring lots, include a letter of consent from the council or other owners.
  2. Submit your application. You can drop off your paperwork at Wrenford City Hall, Room 300, or email the Planning and Development team at [email protected].
  3. Pay the fee. See the fee table below.
  4. Staff review. Our planning staff and landscape inspectors will check your site plan and arborist report. They will confirm the tree's size and condition match your application.

Fees

Application type Fee
First tree removal in a 12-month period $150.00
Each additional tree removal in the same 12-month period $50.00
Inspection of replacement tree planting $75.00

Pay by e-Transfer, credit card, or in person at the Service Wrenford counter. A receipt is required before work begins.

Planting replacement trees

If you remove a tree larger than 20 centimetres in diameter, you must plant a replacement on your property. The replacement must be a healthy, native or adapted species approved by the City. Your permit will state exactly how many replacement trees are required based on your property's existing canopy cover. Landscape inspectors will visit your site after planting to confirm the new trees are established and in good condition.

Why trees matter in Wrenford

Wrenford's trees clean the air, absorb stormwater, reduce erosion, and provide habitat for local wildlife. They also cool our neighbourhoods, lower energy bills, and increase property values. Protecting mature trees helps us adapt to climate change and keeps our city green for the future.

Questions or concerns?

If you suspect a tree is being removed without a permit, or you have questions about the by-law, contact the Planning and Development team. You can also view the Tree removal permits page for step-by-step instructions.
