Why you need a permit
Until the 1960s, many Wrenford homes used oil furnaces with tanks buried in the yard. Today, any underground storage tank (UST) that holds flammable or combustible liquids and has not been used for two years must be removed or safely abandoned in place. This rule comes from the Safety Codes Act and the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, 1997.
Underground tanks can leak and damage the soil or groundwater. Removing or abandoning a tank protects your property value, satisfies lenders and insurers, and keeps your family safe. The Wrenford Fire Prevention Office oversees these permits to make sure work meets the Ontario Building Code and the National Fire Code.
When do I need a permit?
You need a permit before you install, alter, or remove any underground storage tank that holds more than 230 litres of Class I, II, or IIIA liquids. This includes heating oil tanks, waste oil tanks, and any associated underground piping. If you are not sure whether your tank falls under this rule, check our guide on when permits are required.
How to apply
- Fill out the Underground Storage Tank Permit Application Form.
- Submit the form and any required drawings to [email protected] or visit the Fire Prevention Office in person.
- Pay the permit fee. Applications are processed within 10 business days.
- Book your inspection once the work is ready. Do not backfill the site until an inspector approves it.
Removing or abandoning your tank
You have 90 days from the permit issue date to complete the work. You must hire a qualified environmental professional to manage contaminated soil and complete the UST Decommissioning Report. Email the report to [email protected] within 90 days of the inspection. Once we review the report, your permit will be closed.
If you need more time, call 311 or 519-555-0115 before your permit expires. An expired permit requires a new application and fee.
