What you need to know

A sign permit is required when you place a new sign on private property, a building, or in the municipal right-of-way. This includes business signs, community billboards, directional signs, and construction site signs. All signs must follow the rules in Sign By-law 2020-088 and the Zoning bylaw. The City reviews every application to keep streets safe and neighbourhoods looking their best.

Do I need a permit?

You do not need a permit to:

  • Maintain or repair a legally existing sign
  • Change or reduce the copy area of a legally existing sign
  • Place a small yard sign (under 1 square metre) on your own property

You do need a permit for new permanent signs, temporary event signs, directional signs, and construction site signs. Placing signs on public property without approval may result in removal and a fine. The City also encourages residents to use designated neighbourhood billboards for garage and yard sales.

How to apply

Most sign permits are processed through the Wrenford ePermit Portal. Follow these steps:

  1. Check your property's zoning to make sure the sign meets size, height, and placement rules.
  2. Prepare a site plan showing exactly where the sign will be located, including measurements from property lines and buildings.
  3. Create an account in the Wrenford ePermit Portal.
  4. Complete the Sign Permit Application Form and attach all required drawings or engineering stamps if the sign is large or attached to a structure.
  5. Submit the application online or drop off a printed copy at the Business Licensing Office, Wrenford City Hall.

Staff review your application within four weeks. If approved, you will receive a notice of completion with the required fee. Once paid, your permit is active and you can install the sign.

Construction site signs

If your development application requires a site sign, you must use the City's standard design templates. This ensures residents have clear information about the project and the review process. Download the templates and location map instructions from the Planning & Development page. Once staff approve your layout, have the sign printed and installed.

Fees and validity

Permit fees are listed in the annual Fees and Charges By-law. A sign permit is valid for twelve months from the date of issuance. If you need the sign to remain longer, you must apply for an extension before it expires. Extension fees apply under By-law 2025-151.
