Why you need a permit

You must have an approved sewer and water connection permit before connecting your property to the municipal water and sewer systems. Whether you are building a new home, adding a secondary suite, or developing a commercial site, the permit ensures your connection meets Wrenford's engineering standards and protects our water quality.

Residential connections

Residential connections cover single detached houses, duplexes, laneway houses, and secondary suites. You can apply for a single combined residential permit for these building types.

When to apply

Apply for the residential sewer and water connection permit after you have applied for your combined development and building permit but before construction begins.

Application requirements

  • Legal survey plan prepared by a registered land surveyor (signed, sealed, and dated within the past six months).
  • Existing gas service sketch from One Call showing the gas main and connections.
  • Completed application form available through the Building Permits section.

Process

Once we check your application for completeness, we will review your site plan against our standards and confirm the approved design for your service. You will need to pay the initial fees listed in the Fees and Charges By-law 2025-151. After we approve your final drawings and all fees are paid, we will issue your permit. Your connection will be scheduled automatically within four to six months after you pass the sump inspection and cap your sewer pipe at the property line.

Commercial and industrial connections

Larger connections for multiplexes, commercial buildings, and industrial facilities require separate commercial sewer and water permits. A registered professional engineer must prepare these applications.

When to apply

Have your professional engineer apply for the sewer and water permits before you apply for your building permits.

Application requirements

  • Site plan showing proposed sewer and water service sizes and locations, prepared by a registered professional engineer.
  • Legal survey plan prepared by a registered land surveyor (signed, sealed, and dated within the past six months).
  • Existing gas service sketch from One Call.
  • Plumbing schematic showing the building's peak domestic water demand.
  • Fire Unit Service (FUS) calculations, if the property was recently rezoned.
  • Completed certification form for public sewer connections.

Process

We will review your application in detail and provide feedback. After you revise and submit the final site plan and drawings, signed and sealed by your engineer, we will accept the documents and issue your permit. You must email the completed Certification Form for Public Sewer Connections to [email protected]. Our team will then work with you to schedule the service connection and water meter installation.

Fees and by-laws

All connection fees are set out in the Fees and Charges By-law 2025-151 and must comply with the Water and Wastewater By-law 2017-090. Additional charges may apply for oversized connections or required infrastructure upgrades.
