The City of Wrenford will begin its annual spring water main flushing program on Monday, March 9, in the north end of the city. Crews will work through the Benchlands, Northgate, and Hollis Park neighbourhoods to clear sediment from the pipes and improve water pressure and quality for residents.
Flushing is a normal part of keeping our water system running smoothly. By opening hydrants and letting water flow at a controlled speed, crews stir up and wash away minerals and deposits that build up inside older pipes over time. This process also helps check that fire hydrants are working properly and that water reaches every home and business with the right pressure.
If you live or work in the flushing zone, you may notice temporary changes in your water. It might look brown or cloudy for a few minutes. This is safe and just means the sediment is leaving your tap. Simply run the cold water in your bathtub or a sink until it runs clear. Do not run hot water during this time, as the sediment could enter your water heater. You can also run your washing machine or dishwasher to help clear your home’s plumbing.
Crews will operate Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. During flushing, some streets may have temporary speed limits, and you might see crews with cones and signage. In rare cases, water service may be briefly interrupted while crews switch hydrants.
“Spring flushing is one of the most effective ways we maintain safe, clean water for our community,” says Patrick Nguyen, Water Operations Manager. “We ask residents to be patient and to run their cold water taps for a few minutes if they notice any cloudiness. It clears up quickly.”
