Fire prevention week 2026 focuses on kitchen fire safety

Wrenford Fire Rescue is reminding residents to keep a close eye on the stove this October. Fire Prevention Week runs from Monday, October 11 to Sunday, October 17, 2026, and the City is using the week to highlight the most common cause of house fires: unattended cooking.

Staying in the kitchen while you cook is the single most important step you can take. If you are frying, grilling or broiling food, stay with the stove at all times. If you are boiling, baking or simmering, check in at least every fifteen minutes. Keep towels, paper plates and other flammable items away from the burners and oven. If a small grease fire starts, keep a lid nearby to slide over the pan and turn off the heat. Never use water on a grease fire.

Kitchens are the heart of our homes, but they can become dangerous very quickly when we get distracted, says Deputy Fire Chief Simon Hartley. We want every resident to feel confident in their cooking habits and know exactly what to do if a pan catches fire. A quick reaction and a closed lid can stop a small problem from becoming a tragedy.

As the weather turns colder, residents should also remember to check their smoke alarms and keep space heaters clear of curtains and furniture. The City's free smoke and carbon monoxide alarm inspection program runs through the fall and winter for seniors and low-income residents. You can also visit Fire Station 1 at 210 Water Street to pick up a free fire extinguisher and learn how to use it during our open house hours.
