The Roads & Winter Maintenance team has finished its annual winter fleet readiness check at the Civic Operations Centre on Railside Road. Crews and equipment are now fully prepped for the cold months ahead.
This season, the City has prepared 142 winter maintenance vehicles, including salt trucks, plows, and spreaders. The team uses a six-zone plowing schedule to keep the city moving. Main roads and transit routes are cleared after five centimetres of snow. Residential streets are plowed after eight centimetres. The goal is to clear residential roads within 48 hours of a qualifying snowfall.
"Our approach balances road safety, resident needs, and budget," said James Whitford, Roads Superintendent. "We have the right equipment and the right plan to handle whatever winter throws our way."
Residents should keep an eye on the overnight parking ban, which runs from December 1 to March 31 between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. on main roads. Moving your vehicle during these hours helps crews work faster and keeps you safe. You can also sign up for alerts to know when plows are coming to your street.
