The City of Wrenford is giving away free trees to residents who want to grow the urban forest this spring. Through the Canopy for Wrenford programme, eligible households can register for one free tree to plant in their yard. The programme aims to increase tree cover across our 92,400-person city, reduce street-level heat, and provide habitats for local birds and pollinators.
Registration opens on Monday, February 2, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. through the Participate in the tree planting program page. You can choose from a selection of hardy, climate-ready species, including the Red Oak, Silver Maple, and Eastern White Pine. Each tree comes with a planting guide and a care calendar to help it establish strong roots.
"If you have a suitable spot in your yard, this is a great chance to add a tree that will grow with your home for decades," said Maya Chen-Watson, Parks Planner. "We are providing the tree and the planting instructions. You just need to dig the hole and water it regularly for the first two growing seasons."
Before you plant, make sure the site is clear of underground utilities. Call 811 before you dig to locate underground lines. You can also check the Learn about tree protection and preservation page for details on the Tree Protection By-law 2018-045. This by-law helps protect mature trees on private property and outlines permit requirements for larger trees.
Trees will be available for pickup at the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility starting in late April. Staff will be on hand to answer questions about soil preparation and mulching. If you have questions about tree care, by-law rules, or permit applications, email [email protected] or call 519-555-0100.
Join us in building a cooler, greener Wrenford. Sign up early this spring to secure your free tree and help the City reach its goal of expanding shade cover on our streets and parks.
