Starting January 1, 2026, the City of Wrenford opens a new ice trail at Ambrel Lake Park for New Year walks and skating. The loop follows the existing boardwalk and offers a safe, scenic route for residents to enjoy the winter season.
The 1.2-kilometre trail is groomed weekly by Roads & Winter Maintenance crews and checked daily for ice safety. Wrenford Transit Route 12 stops at the park entrance, and the Downtown Transit Terminal is open early for transit staff and visitors. If you plan to bring a bike, the trail is also suitable for fat-biking once the ice reaches 10 centimetres. The City has also installed new lighting along the main path to help you see the trail clearly after dark.
"We want to make sure families have a free, accessible place to get outside this winter," says Maya Chen-Watson, Parks Planner. "This trail gives people a reason to explore the park year-round, and we've added extra salt and sand at the main access points so you can walk without slipping."
Skate rentals are available at the nearby Ambrel Lake Recreation Centre, and the Tamsin Valley Leisure Centre offers a full schedule of winter fitness classes. Remember to dress in layers, wear non-slip boots, and keep dogs on a leash unless you are visiting the nearby Hollis Park Off-Leash Area. The City's Parks & Trails team will monitor weather conditions and close the trail if temperatures rise above freezing or if ice thickness falls below safe levels. If you see a pothole, a fallen branch, or a lighting issue, you can report it through the City's maintenance portal or by calling 311.
