Wrenford launches 2025 winter snow clearing plan ahead of first storm

The City of Wrenford has released its 2025 winter snow clearing plan, putting crews and equipment on standby for the first storms of the season. With the overnight parking ban set to start on December 1, the Roads & Winter Maintenance team is finalizing its routes and safety protocols.

The updated plan organizes the city’s roads into priority levels to ensure the most heavily travelled routes get cleared first. Main roads are cleared as conditions allow, starting at five centimetres of snow. Residential streets are cleared on a regular schedule, usually within 48 hours of a snowfall that reaches eight centimetres. Sidewalks near schools, transit stops, and major facilities like Wrenford City Hall and the Downtown Transit Terminal are a top priority for plowing and ice treatment.

“We are ready to keep Wrenford moving through the cold months,” said James Whitford, Roads Superintendent. “Our crews have completed their training, and we have stocked up on salt and brine to treat the most critical routes before the ice sets in.”

Crews use a mix of large plows and smaller trucks to navigate neighbourhoods efficiently. The City also maintains a fleet of sand and salt spreaders to treat intersections and hilltops where traction is needed. While the City handles public roads, property owners and businesses are responsible for clearing the sidewalks in front of their homes and buildings under the Winter Maintenance and Parking By-law 2020-097.

Residents are reminded of the overnight on-street parking ban, which runs from 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. between December 1 and March 31. Planners and by-law enforcement officers patrol the routes to ensure streets are clear for maintenance vehicles. If you live on a snow route and have a verified mobility condition, you can apply for an exemption Apply for a snow route parking ban exemption.

As snow accumulates, you can report missed spots, downed power lines, or traffic signal problems through the city's service portal or by calling 519-555-0100. For after-hours emergencies like a major water main break or a hazardous tree blocking a road, call 519-555-0111.

The City encourages everyone to dress warmly, allow extra time for travel, and check on neighbours who may need help shoveling. For a full list of winter service routes and how to request a route change, visit the Roads & Winter Maintenance page.
