The City of Wrenford is upgrading the ice resurfacing system at the Westbrook Community Arena to improve energy efficiency and reliability for the public skating season. Construction will begin in March 2025.
The existing piping and glycol chillers at the arena have reached the end of their service life. Frequent breakdowns during the winter months have caused unexpected closures for public skating and community programmes. The new system will use modern chillers and a closed-loop refrigerant that cuts energy use by roughly 30 per cent and reduces water waste. This project is funded through the 2025 Capital Improvement Plan under the Community Facilities category.
Because the work involves digging up the ice plant area and connecting new piping, both ice pads at the arena will be closed from March 10 to April 5, 2025. During that time, public skating sessions will be moved to the Eastfield Twin Arenas and the Tamsin Valley Leisure Centre. You can check the facilities page or call the arena directly at 519-555-0122 for updated schedules and any changes to league play.
As part of the planning and development process, the City reviewed the construction plans to ensure they meet engineering standards and environmental guidelines. The project team obtained a construction noise permit for the demolition of the old piping and a street use permit to park equipment along Westbrook Drive during delivery days. All permits and engineering reviews were processed through the development applications office. City by-law officers will monitor the site to keep the neighbourhood quiet and safe while crews work.
"We are investing in reliable, energy-efficient infrastructure that supports our community programmes for years to come," said Fiona Gallagher, General Manager of Community Services. "This upgrade means fewer unexpected closures and a better experience for skaters and league organizers."
