The City of Wrenford is launching the Wrenford Suite Support Programme this January to help homeowners add safe, legal secondary suites to their properties. Whether you have a finished basement or a detached garage, this programme makes it easier to turn unused space into affordable rental housing for your neighbours.
To get started, the City is hiring Suite Navigators—planning staff who will walk you through the process step by step. They can help you book a Residential Pre-Application Consultation or submit your development permit through the City's online system. As a January special, the City is waiving the booking fee for a consultation with a Suite Navigator for all participants.
“I’m excited to see homeowners in Wrenford using their properties to create more housing options,” said City Manager Robert Eng. “This programme cuts through the red tape so you can focus on building safe, quality homes in your own community.”
Once your plan is approved, you will need a building permit. The total cost to build a new backyard suite is $1,300.00, while a new basement suite is $676.00. If you already have a suite in place, legalizing it costs $332.80. All fees are set out in the city’s fees and charges by-law. The Suite Navigators can also explain the safety codes you will need to meet, like smoke alarms and egress windows, before your final inspection.
