The City of Wrenford is celebrating Fire Prevention Week from October 6 to 12, 2025, and this year’s focus is on keeping your home safe from lithium-ion battery fires. To help residents get ready for the holidays and winter, the Wrenford Fire Rescue team will host a family-friendly open house at Fire Station 3 on Saturday, October 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Stop by at 35 Westbrook Drive to take a tour of the fire trucks, meet your local firefighters, and pick up a free fire safety guide. The event will also feature a donation drive for the Wrenford Food Bank, so please bring a non-perishable food item when you visit.
“Fire Prevention Week is a chance for all of us to learn simple steps that protect our families and our homes,” said Deputy Fire Chief Simon Hartley. “Most of the devices we use every day run on lithium-ion batteries. By charging them correctly and knowing what to look for, we can stop fires before they start.”
Fire prevention officers are sharing four easy rules to follow at home:
- Use the original charger or one approved by the manufacturer.
- Charge devices on a hard, flat surface. Avoid beds, couches, and carpets, which trap heat.
- Do not leave devices plugged in after they reach full charge.
- Stop using a battery immediately if it gets very hot, swells, leaks, or makes unusual noises. If it is safe to do so, move the device away from flammable items and call 9-1-1.
Older or damaged batteries should never go in your garbage or Blue Box. Bring them to the Household Hazardous Waste depot at the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility, or check the recycling locator on the City’s website to find a drop-off point near you.
