Fire department reminds public of fireworks safety rules 2025

The Wrenford Fire Rescue is reminding residents about fireworks safety rules and permit requirements ahead of Canada Day on July 1. Whether you are planning a backyard gathering or a large community celebration, following these guidelines keeps everyone safe.

Never use fireworks inside your home or garage. Always set them up outside on a flat, clear surface away from trees, buildings, and dry grass. Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby in case a fire starts. Never light a firework if it has already been lit, and never try to relight or fix a dud. Wait 20 minutes and soak it in water before throwing it away. Always supervise children and pets, and keep them at a safe distance.

Under By-law 2025-089, the sale, possession, and use of fireworks are banned year-round without a permit. If you want to host a fireworks display, you must apply online at least 10 days before your event. You must be 19 years of age or older to apply. Your application requires a completed Fireworks Safety Plan, a signed letter from the property owner giving permission, and proof of general liability insurance for at least $5,000,000.00 per occurrence. You must also keep all fireworks at least 500 metres away from any livestock properties.

"We want everyone to enjoy Canada Day safely," says Deputy Fire Chief Simon Hartley. "Following these rules keeps our neighbourhoods, animals, and first responders safe."

Anyone caught breaking the by-law faces a $500.00 fine. If you see someone using fireworks illegally, please report it. You can file a complaint through the Service Wrenford app or call 311 to report a by-law infraction. For questions on how to obtain a permit, email [email protected].
