Fire department launches smoke alarm compliance campaign 2025

The Wrenford Fire Department is launching Sound the Alarm: Stay Safe, Wrenford, a city-wide initiative to make sure every home has working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms before the warmer months arrive. Fire safety experts know that working alarms give you the crucial extra minutes needed to escape a fire or respond to dangerous carbon monoxide levels.

The new campaign offers free home inspections for residents aged 65 and older, as well as low-income households. For other residents, a standard inspection fee of $25.00 applies. You can book an appointment by calling 519-555-0115 or through the city's online booking system. Inspections are scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

A Fire Prevention Officer will visit your home to test your alarms, check for expired units, and ensure they are placed in the right spots. Alarms older than 10 years should be replaced immediately. If you need a new alarm, the officer will advise you on the best options and where to purchase one.

"Every minute counts when a fire breaks out. A working smoke and carbon monoxide alarm gives you the time you need to get your family out safely," says Deputy Fire Chief Simon Hartley. "We want to make sure no resident is left without a working alarm this spring. This campaign is about peace of mind and keeping our neighbourhoods secure."

You can also learn more about fire safety planning and maintenance requirements on the Fire Rescue page. If you have questions about the inspection fee or need help booking a visit, contact the team at Fire Station 1 (Headquarters).

In the meantime, test your alarms yourself at least once a month and replace the batteries as needed. Visit the Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms page for full safety guidelines, troubleshooting tips, and information on assistive alerting devices for hearing-impaired residents.
