Fire department conducts ice rescue training at Ambrel Lake 2025

The Wrenford Fire Rescue team will conduct ice rescue training at Ambrel Lake from January 27 to February 9, 2025. This annual exercise helps our crews maintain the specialized skills needed to respond safely to emergencies on the ice.

During this period, crews will create and maintain open water in the ice to practice rescue techniques. The training area will be clearly marked with barrier tape, cones and safety signs to keep the public out of the hazard zone. We strongly advise residents and visitors to avoid the area while the training is underway. Please stay well back from any openings in the ice and use caution when walking near the shoreline. Your safety is our top priority.

Ice rescue is one of the most critical skills our firefighters practice each winter. "Keeping these drills current ensures we are ready to respond safely and quickly if an emergency happens on the ice," said Deputy Fire Chief Simon Hartley. "We also coordinate closely with the Wrenford Police Service and Wrenford Paramedic Services so that everyone works together as a team."

If you ever find yourself in a situation where someone is on thin ice, remember these simple steps. Do not walk onto the ice yourself. Instead, call 9-1-1 immediately. If you have a long object like a pole, a branch or a rope, you can try to reach the person from solid ground. If you have a flotation device like a life jacket, a cooler or a thick piece of Styrofoam, you can toss it to them so they can hold on until help arrives.

We appreciate your cooperation as our firefighters carry out this important training. For more information on fire prevention and safety programs, visit our Fire Rescue page. If you want to learn more about how to stay safe during winter emergencies, check out What to do during an emergency.
