East Wrenford Waste Facility reports recycling diversion rate increase

Wrenford's waste diversion rate has reached a new high. City staff at the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility report that 60 per cent of the waste collected through curbside programmes was diverted from the landfill in the first half of 2025. This marks the first time the city has hit the 60 per cent target set in the Waste Management Strategy 2026–2030.

Staff attribute the jump to improved sorting habits and expanded collection in multi-unit buildings. More residents are correctly separating their Green Bin organics and Blue Box recycling from general garbage. The facility processed over 15,000 tonnes of recyclables and organics between January and June.

"When residents take the time to sort their waste correctly, it shows up in the numbers," says Ben Achterberg, Waste Programs Supervisor. "Every properly sorted bin keeps material out of the landfill and helps us meet our budget targets for waste management. Lower tipping fees mean more stable property taxes for homeowners and businesses."

The increase also aligns with the city's annual budget planning, which relies on reduced tipping fees and higher diversion credits to balance the long-term waste strategy. By keeping diversion rates high, the city avoids costly landfill expansion projects and keeps the facility operating within its approved capital envelope.

You can help keep the rate climbing by checking the recycling guide online, keeping your Green Bin lids closed to prevent contamination, and dropping off bulky items at the facility during operating hours. Multi-unit residents should remind their property managers to request additional recycling carts.
