Civic Ops Centre hosts business waste diversion workshop

The City of Wrenford will host a free business waste diversion workshop at the Civic Operations Centre on Thursday, October 23, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. The session is designed to help local business owners understand how to separate materials properly, reduce landfill fees, and meet the city's 60 per cent diversion target by 2030.

Located at 455 Railside Road, the workshop will cover the requirements under the Waste Management By-law 2023-105. Ben Achterberg, the city's Waste Programs Supervisor, will walk participants through the new Blue Box program changes and show them how to use the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility drop-off depot for hard-to-recycle items.

"We want to make it as simple as possible for Wrenford businesses to get their recycling right," said Ben Achterberg. "When we get the sorting right at the source, we keep costs down and keep more material out of the landfill."

Attendees will learn how to set up a three-stream system (general waste, Blue Box recycling, and Green Bin organics) in their workspaces, how to handle construction debris, and where to find the city's free signage and bin kits. Isabel Moreno, the Economic Development Manager, will also be on hand to discuss available environmental initiative grants that can cover up to $7,500 for projects that cut energy use and waste.

Space is limited to 30 participants, so registration is required. Businesses can sign up by calling 519-555-0112 or emailing [email protected]. The workshop will be held in the training room at the Civic Operations Centre. Free parking is available in the rear lot.
