Civic Operations Centre updates winter vehicle repair protocols

Starting today, the Civic Operations Centre at 455 Railside Road, Wrenford, ON N4Q 3K7 (519-555-0112) is rolling out updated protocols for repairing winter maintenance vehicles. The changes are designed to keep plow trucks, salt spreaders, and gritters on the road as quickly as possible when Tamsin Valley sees heavy snow or ice.

Fleet mechanics will now prioritize snow route equipment over non-essential vehicles. A dedicated parts inventory for common winter wear-and-tear—like plow blades and salt spreader gears—will be kept on hand to cut down on wait times. Mechanics work around the clock during storms, and this new triage system ensures that every truck meeting the road has the parts it needs to do its job safely.

Winter weather puts a heavy strain on the municipal fleet. When a storm hits, vehicles take on extra weight and face rough road conditions. The City wants to be clear that safety is never compromised. Any vehicle that returns to a snow route after a repair meets strict engineering standards. If a critical fix takes longer than expected, crews may temporarily reassign reserve trucks to keep coverage steady across all six winter zones.

“Our mechanics are working hard to keep our fleet ready for the next storm,” says James Whitford, Roads Superintendent. “This updated process means fewer delays and clearer communication when a truck needs a quick fix or a replacement part. We know residents rely on us to clear residential streets within 48 hours of an eight-centimetre snowfall, and keeping our trucks running is the first step.”

During heavy storms, minor delays can happen if a truck is pulled in for a critical repair. If you notice a plow truck driving without a plow or salt box, or if you have concerns about winter service vehicle damage, please report it through Wrenford 311 or the online service request portal.
