The City of Wrenford's Roads & Winter Maintenance crew is kicking off the annual winter fleet maintenance program today at the Civic Operations Centre, 455 Railside Road. With the first snowfall expected soon, the team is inspecting, testing, and preparing every snowplow and salt truck for the season.
Maintenance crews will spend the next two weeks running diagnostics on engine performance, checking hydraulic systems for plows, and calibrating spreaders to ensure an even distribution of sand and brine. Each vehicle will undergo a full safety check, including tires, lights, and brakes, before returning to active service. The goal is to have every truck on the road and ready to respond within hours of a storm.
"Our winter fleet is the backbone of our response plan," said James Whitford, Roads Superintendent. "Getting these machines tuned up and tested now means we can clear main roads as soon as we hit five centimetres of snow, and residential streets shortly after we reach eight centimetres. We divide the city into six winter sectors to make sure every neighbourhood gets cleared within 48 hours."
Residents are asked to help crews work efficiently by moving vehicles off the street during snow events. The overnight on-street parking ban runs from December 1 to March 31, from 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. You can also sign up for winter alert notifications so you know exactly when your neighbourhood is scheduled for plowing. Please stay back at least three car lengths from plowing equipment and slow down on wet or slushy roads.
