Wrenford prepares winter operations with updated snow clearing plan

Wrenford is rolling out an updated snow and ice clearing plan for the upcoming winter season to keep streets and walkways safe for everyone. City Council reviewed the updated operations plan in November, and crews are already preparing equipment and stockpiling materials ahead of the first snowfall.

The plan uses a six-level priority system to guide how and when roads are cleared. Major arterial roads and transit routes receive immediate attention as soon as conditions allow. Local residential streets follow a scheduled route, divided into six winter sectors to ensure every neighbourhood is serviced within 48 hours after a snowfall of 8 centimetres or more. The City begins plowing main roads after 5 centimetres of snow and residential streets after 8 centimetres, applying sand and salt as temperatures drop below freezing.

"Our priority is keeping Wrenford moving safely through whatever the weather brings," said Mayor Danielle Okafor-Price. "By organizing our crews and equipment into a clear priority system, we can respond faster and keep our community accessible all season long."

Preparation is well underway. The City has increased its brine truck fleet for high-priority routes and stocked up on salt and de-icing materials. All winter operators have completed specialized training on ice management and safe driving conditions. The Roads & Winter Maintenance team will also begin clearing snow from high-traffic sidewalks near schools, parks, and municipal facilities, as well as bus stops and pedestrian overpasses.

Residents play an important role in keeping the city safe. Under the Winter Maintenance and Parking By-law, property owners and tenants are responsible for clearing snow and ice from the sidewalks and driveways in front of their homes. An overnight on-street parking ban will be in effect from December 1 to March 31, between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., to allow crews to work without obstruction. Please check the Snow route parking bans page for your specific street.

During active snow events, the City will post updates on Service Alerts and Wrenford 311. You can report a missed clearing, a blocked bus stop, or a drainage issue by calling 311 during the day or 519-555-0111 after hours.
