Wrenford council approves 2025 property tax rates

On November 20, 2024, Wrenford City Council approved the 2025 Tax Levy By-law during a regular meeting in the Council Chambers at Wrenford City Hall. This step finalizes the property tax rates needed to collect revenue for the 2025 operating budget.

Under provincial rules, the City must pass an annual tax rate by-law to fund municipal services and collect requisitions. Requisitions are payments collected on behalf of other organizations, such as the provincial education tax. They make up about 25 per cent of an average residential tax notice.

Council approved a 3.8 per cent increase to the City’s portion of property taxes for 2025. When you add the provincial education requisition and other required payments, the total increase on residential tax notices is 5.2 per cent. Commercial and industrial properties will see a 6.1 per cent increase, while multi-family housing will increase by 4.9 per cent.

“For every $100,000 of assessed value, a typical residential property will pay $47.50 more per year,” said Mayor Danielle Okafor-Price. “We kept the City’s portion of the increase low by managing our budget carefully and relying on growth from new development to fund new infrastructure. This approach protects homeowners while ensuring we have the money to maintain the services and roads you rely on every day.”

Property taxes fund 42 per cent of the City’s total budget. Your tax dollars pay for police and fire protection, road maintenance and snow removal, public transit, park upkeep, and library services. The City also uses tax revenue to build reserves for future projects, like the Corvid Creek Ravine Pathway Extension and the Northgate Aquatic Centre rebuild.

You will receive your interim tax bill in February, with a due date in April. The final bill arrives in June, with a due date in September. If you prefer, you can set up a pre-authorized monthly payment plan through your bank or pay online.
