Snow clearing efforts continue after historic blizzard hits Wrenford

City of Wrenford crews are working around the clock to clear roads and sidewalks across the city following a historic blizzard that dumped heavy snow on Wrenford earlier this week. The storm has brought travel to a near standstill in many neighbourhoods, and the City's Roads & Winter Maintenance team, alongside the Wrenford Police Service, is focused on keeping main arteries and emergency routes open.

Since the storm began, crews have been plowing major roads as soon as the snow reached five centimetres. Residential streets, which require eight centimetres of accumulation before crews respond, are being cleared in order of priority. Sidewalks near schools, transit stops, and municipal facilities are also being cleared daily. Residents in areas like Downtown, Benchlands, and Northgate have reported deep drifts along their streets, but crews are making steady progress.

"We know this storm has tested our community's patience, but our crews are working tirelessly to keep Wrenford moving safely," said City Manager Robert Eng. "We appreciate residents' patience as we prioritize major roads and work through residential streets. Please remember that front-yard sidewalks and driveways are the property owner's responsibility."

The City's Winter Maintenance and Parking By-law 2020-097 is in effect, meaning an overnight on-street parking ban is active from 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. The Wrenford Police Service is enforcing this to ensure snowplows can reach every street. If you see a parked car blocking a plow, call 311 or 519-555-0100.

Residents should keep their driveways and walkways clear so crews can access them. Report missed collections, blocked roads, or downed branches through the Wrenford 311 portal or by calling 311. For the most current road conditions, check the Service Alerts page or listen to local radio.

Preparing for winter storms is an ongoing effort. The City encourages everyone to review the Extreme weather and storm preparedness guide before the next storm hits. Businesses can find specific protocols in the Emergency preparedness for businesses checklist. If you need help planning for severe weather, the Snow and ice emergency preparedness page offers step-by-step tips. Stay safe, keep your vehicle fueled, and check on your neighbours. More information about winter maintenance and reporting issues is available on the Roads & Winter Maintenance page.
