Starting July 1, 2024, seniors in Wrenford will have easier access to more parts of the city with expanded transit benefits. The City of Wrenford is extending the Wrenford Senior Transit Grant to cover additional fixed routes that serve our outer neighbourhoods and rural corridors. This change means you can ride Routes 5, 9, 13, and 14 at a discounted rate with your senior transit card.
For years, the grant has supported seniors riding the core downtown and lake-area routes. Now, we are including the routes that connect the Kingfisher, Copper Ridge, Industrial Park East, and Tamarack areas. These routes carry riders to medical clinics, shopping centres, and community hubs that are a bit further from the city centre. By lowering the cost of travel on these lines, we want to make sure older residents can visit family, attend appointments, and stay active without worrying about the fare.
"Public transit is a lifeline for our older residents, and it needs to work for everyone," said City Manager Robert Eng. "By expanding the Senior Transit Grant to these four additional routes, we are removing a barrier to travel. Seniors should be able to go where they need to go, comfortably and affordably, no matter which part of Wrenford they call home."
You do not need to reapply for this change. If you already have a Wrenford Senior Transit Grant card, it will be automatically updated in our system by the end of June. When you tap your card on the bus reader, the system will recognize the route and apply the correct discount. If you are new to the programme or need help setting up your card, visit the Service Wrenford counter at City Hall or call 311. Our transit staff can walk you through the application and answer any questions.
The City is also looking at other ways to make travel easier for older riders, including better seating on buses and more time at stops for boarding.
