Northgate Aquatic Centre staff training begins for summer season

City staff and recreation team members are gathering at the Northgate Aquatic Centre today to begin summer season training. Over the next few weeks, lifeguards, instructors, and facility operators will complete mandatory safety certifications and program drills before the public doors open.

The facility at 910 Northgate Boulevard was rebuilt in 2024 to modern standards. It features a 50-metre lap pool, a dive tank, and a waterslide. It serves swimmers from the Northgate, Kingfisher, Railside, and Copper Ridge neighbourhoods, making it one of the city’s busiest aquatic sites.

“We are putting in the work now so that when the water turns on in late June, everything runs smoothly for our families,” says Caroline Dubé, Recreation Programs Coordinator. “Staff are refreshing their lifeguarding skills, practicing emergency response, and getting ready for the high volume of swimmers we expect.”

Training covers water rescue techniques, chemical balance management, and first aid. It also includes a review of the Neighbourhoods outreach schedule, ensuring program information reaches residents across all six wards.

If you want to join public swim, length swim, or take swimming lessons, mark your calendars. Registration for the Spring and Summer 2027 programs opens on Monday, March 1, 2027. You can view the full schedule and book your spot online.
