New accessible playground equipment installed at Riverside Flats Park

The City of Wrenford has installed new accessible playground equipment at Riverside Flats Park. The upgrade, completed in early June, gives families a welcoming space where children of all abilities can play side by side. Construction began last autumn after a series of community meetings helped city planners understand what neighbourhoods needed most.

The new equipment features wheelchair-accessible play structures, a soft rubber surface for safe movement, and shade covers. You will also find sensory panels, musical elements, and quiet play zones designed to help children who need a break from busy environments. City planners worked with accessibility experts to make sure every piece of equipment meets the city's universal design standards. The project was funded through the city’s 2024 capital budget and a provincial community infrastructure grant.

“Accessible playgrounds create spaces where children of all abilities can play together,” said Fiona Gallagher, General Manager of Community Services. “This upgrade reflects our commitment to building inclusive neighbourhoods where every family feels welcome. We wanted to make sure the new equipment is durable, easy to reach, and fun for kids of every age.”

The project is part of the city’s wider effort to improve outdoor play spaces across all six wards. Future playground upgrades will follow the same inclusive design principles, focusing on physical access, sensory experiences, and social connection. The city is also planning a community consultation later this year to hear your ideas for making parks even more welcoming.
